Students from Springfield Commonwealth Academy (SCA) represented the voices of youth at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. Held from November 11 to 22, 2024, the summit brought together leaders and delegates from 198 nations to review global progress and strengthen commitments toward addressing climate change.

Among the many young representatives from around the world, a team of SCA students joined youth climate forums and panel discussions to advocate for stronger international cooperation and more sustainable practices. The SCA delegation attended sessions focusing on climate innovation, renewable energy, biodiversity, and green technology, connecting with policymakers and industry leaders to exchange ideas on actionable solutions.

“The climate crisis is not a future issue — it is happening now,” said one SCA student delegate during a youth forum. “We, as the younger generation, have the responsibility to demand change and help shape a livable future.”

Their participation highlighted SCA’s emphasis on global citizenship education, encouraging students to engage with real-world issues and contribute to the global dialogue on sustainability.

Uzbekistan Pavilion: Tradition Meets Innovation

One of COP29’s highlights was the Uzbekistan Pavilion, which impressed attendees with its integration of traditional architecture and sustainable design. Modeled after the Uzbek hovli — a courtyard that connects home and nature — the pavilion used natural materials and greenery to symbolize harmony with the environment.

Uzbekistan’s Ministries of Water Resources, Energy, and Economic Development hosted over 20 events at the pavilion, including policy dialogues, partnership signings, and youth discussions centered on renewable energy, food security, and innovation.

SCA’s Message for a Sustainable Future

Throughout COP29, SCA students emphasized the need for inclusive climate leadership and youth involvement in policymaking. By collaborating with international delegates and sharing

perspectives from Asia and the United States, they showcased how education can empower global responsibility.

“Our generation must be part of the conversation,” said another student delegate. “It’s not just about observing change — it’s about creating it.”

As COP29 continues, the participation of SCA students stands as a proud example of how young leaders from around the world — and from our own campus — are stepping forward to protect the planet.
